Information on the PRINCE2 Foundation Exam and APMG sample paper

You may find it useful to understand the format and duration of the examinations to assist you in your preparation. 

The PRINCE2® Foundation Exam is a short multiple-choice style examination with 75 questions to be taken in one hour. Five of the questions are trial questions but you will not know which these are so you are expected to answer all questions.

This is a closed book examination and to do well you will need to be familiar with the Principles of PRINCE2, the terminology, its processes and themes. This includes understanding the purpose and responsibilities of each role, the relationship between the processes, themes, roles and techniques and the PRINCE2 management products.

  • Closed book
  • 75 multiple choice questions (of which 70 are exam questions and 5 are trial questions)
  • Pass mark is 35/70
  • Each of the exam questions is worth 1 mark, trial questions are not scored
  • 1 hour duration

From the PRINCE2 2009 Examination Syllabus:

This level is aiming to measure whether a candidate could act as an informed member of a project management team on a project using the PRINCE2 method, within an environment supporting PRINCE2.To this end they need to show they understand the principles and terminology of the method. Specifically:-

  • Understand the purpose and responsibilities of all roles
  • Understand the seven principles, the seven themes, the seven processes, and the Product-based Planning and Quality Review techniques.
  • Understand which management products are input to, output from, and updated in the seven processes.
  • Understand the purpose of all management products and the composition of the Business Case, Product Descriptions, Issue Report and the Issue, Risk and Quality Register
  • Understand the relationship between principles, processes, themes, deliverables and roles within a PRINCE2 project.
